I can honestly say that no book that I have read in recent times has had the emotional impact on me that this book has had. I rode right alongside this mother from the first diagnosis of her child's illness, right through to the conclusion. Even before her child's illness, I had to keep asking myself; are there really parents out there who treat their children as horrifically as this woman's mother and her family had treated her? She went from an abused child, to a loveless marriage filled with physical, mental and sexual abuse, to losing her first child to a stillborn birth and then finally reaping the rewards with two beautiful young boys. Then little Eli was struck down with cancer. We follow his journey, step by step as the young mother attempts to keep her sanity, split her time between one child in hospital and one 250 miles away. You can feel her anguish and pain. The very people who should have been helping to ease her burden; her mother, her siblings and her soon to be ex-husband were so busy plotting and planning on how they could benefit from this turn of events, she was left to struggle along with support only from some special friends. This book is a harrowing read, make no mistake, but it is also incredibly rewarding. To anyone who has ever complained about how hard their life is - I say; read "When Angels Fly". To anyone who has ever said their life sucked - I say; read "When Angels Fly". The courage, fortitude and the immense challenges that this woman and her beautiful son faced, you can't help but be uplifted and reminded just how much we all have to be grateful for. The book is in a large part a daily journal of Eli's time in hospital and I totally understand the need the author felt to document every day - every day with her son was so very precious. The writing style was at times slightly hard to read, but nothing can take away from the powerful impact it had on me as a reader. I was truly moved by and genuinely felt everything this poor woman had to endure... mostly alone. Any other book that had these editorial issues would have only garnered four stars from me, but there's no way I could not give this five stars. The memories of Sarah, Noah and Eli will live in my memory well after I've consigned this book to the "read" shelf. I feel privileged to have shared Sarah's harrowing journey. When Angels Fly does exactly what it sets out to do I believe - it reminds us that "There but for the grace of God, go I". I recommend this book to all.... it will make you cry, but it will also uplift you. Well done. ~ Grant Leishman, We often find ourselves daydreaming about what our futures will be like. This may be especially true if one lives in an environment most would consider less than desirable. Some are lucky to find their futures much like their childhood dreams. Others find the paths to their dreams strewn with hurdles. Growing up, Sarah dodged her mother's blows. She often hid in her room crying about her life. Still, she believes in her future and the happiness it can bring. In their book, When Angels Fly, authors S. Jackson and A. Raymond tell Sarah's story - their stories. The authors use their journals to describe Sarah's experiences of family dys- function, strength, courage, faith, abuse, grief, and so much more. You'll read how, like many, she attempts to escape from her mother's abuse through marriage. And like many, she learns it is not a viable alternative. Then Sarah experiences a parent's ultimate tragedy twice, the deaths of her sons, Joshua and Eli. When Angels Fly is about much more than the telling of a family's tragedy. It is also the story of finding faith after it has wavered. Most of all, it's a story of love lost and found. After reading When Angels Fly, I realized how fortunate I am that my two children are alive and well. ~ J. Thayer McKinney "Beautifully written, deeply touching, spiritually blessed through God! Life affirming!" ~ Sonia

This was a heart-wrenching story! The protagonist, Sally, -- I hope that’s her name. It was not mentioned at the beginning of the story, and it came up very rarely – suffered the type of abuse that no one should ever be subjected to. First, from her mother, Ethel, who seemed to be a mother from hell, and then her husband, Henry, who was a maniac, a sociopath, a psychopath and any other “path” I could find to throw at him! I have read about men who abuse their women, but Henry’s form of abuse was extreme. As if that was no enough, life threw Sally an ugly curve with the scourge of cancer that ravaged her son Eli for several months.

I could not put the story down until the author chose to use two chapters of the book to talk about cancer and its treatment. Something that could have been left out of the story, as the story already contained all those facts. This excess information slowed down the reading for me. I just wanted to know what happened with Eli, and how things ended between Sally and Henry. I also wanted to know what happened to her mother.

Apart from this diversion, I returned and was glued to the story until the end. The evil that men do always return to haunt them. At one point, Matt, Sally’s friend disappeared from the story, but I’m happy about how things finally turned out between them. In the whole, this was a great read, but a story which I hope the author will continue to return to and tweak by removing all the unnecessary parts, and tightening the editing until it is perfect.

WHEN ANGELS FLY
By
S Jackson
A. Raymond
Sarah is wracked with every possible adverse event a mother could face. She grew up with the mother from “hell,” a woman who dragged her around the house by her hair. To get away, she married a man who was an alcoholic and a wife beater, mentally and physically. Sarah finally found the happiness she sought in the baby, Joshua, who passed away early on. Then came two other healthy boys, Noah and Eli. Things were looking up for Sarah. Until the unthinkable happened. Eli came down with Cancer, a rare and aggressive form that zapped the life out of him.
This is the story of Sarah’s struggle to care for and keep Eli alive with the help of some superb medical professionals and despite some inept and incompetent doctors and nurses. To add fuel to this fire, mother Ethel and husband Henry do their best to sabotage everything Sarah tries to do for her son.
There are the court hearings, the constant verbal abuse, recording conversations, and stealing Sarah’s documentaries about her son’s care. The divorce that takes way-to-long to finalize.
But, along with that, there are the good times. The moments when Eli sets up squirt water game at the medical professionals with a needleless syringe---and other games that make Eli and his mother laugh. There’s Eli’s little red tricycle that he races down he hallways. There’s Matt, a true and increasingly deep friend who surrounds Sarah with love, something she’s needed for a long time.
“What ever was attacking his thin little body was simply eating up all the platelets as soon as they were transfused.” Sarah
“Just when I thought I couldn’t cry anymore, out poured more tears. I cried silently around Eli as my heart broke into a million pieces.” Sarah.
“When Angels Fly” is a cross between memoir and journal. I can’t imagine the story being written any other way.
There are some problems Misspellings, typos, formatting issues and other technicalities, but after I noticed them, I barely saw them anymore. The book engrossed me so that I fell into the lives and surroundings of Sarah, Eli, Noah, Ardy, Matt---Henry, Ethel and Gavin and all the medical staff. They were a fascinating study of humanity (and non-humanity.)
I gave this story five stars. It was well-worth the read and embraced my entire emotional center.

This book was, of course, difficult. Not to read...just to finish, knowing how it would ultimately end. I'm so glad I read it, though, and I thank Ms. Jackson for having the courage to share her story. It is when we read such tales we are reminded of some important truths. First and foremost, it reminds us that life does not happen in a vacuum. You can have a significant event in your life - a wedding, a birth, a serious injury/illness or - regrettably - a death - but that doesn't mean the rest of your life is put on hold so you can either bask in or contend with that event, uninterrupted. You may be stuck in a dysfunctional marriage throughout your life event. You may have a job you're trying to keep, children you're trying to raise, meals you're trying to make, bills you're trying to pay, a house you're trying to keep reasonably clean. It is all this other "stuff" happening when you're preoccupied with your big life event that can ultimately throw you over the edge. Well, this woman had much more than her fair share of cruddy "stuff" to contend with while also grappling with the devastating diagnosis and treatment of her son's cancer - from "big ticket items" like a previous tragic loss, as well as an abusive parent AND an abusive husband, to the somewhat less "dramatic", but still significant challenges, like a long commute to the hospital where her son required very lengthy stays (translating to, among other problems and complications, prolonged absences from her other son). One has to remember that when they see someone struggling to come to terms with a [negative] life event, when maybe they shared a similar event of their own or know someone else who has, and seemed to recover "faster" or "easier", that there are many "side" circumstances that translate to significantly different experiences. If you lose a child but you have a supportive family helping you through it, that's an ENTIRELY different situation than losing a child and having family member(s) sabotaging and knocking you down at every opportunity. Maybe even more importantly, if you lose a child under such extreme circumstances, you can't judge YOURSELF against others who also suffered a tragic loss but had the love and support you so desperately could have used. Aside from being thankful for the life lessons I was reminded of and taught throughout these pages, I was simply honored to share in the journey. There were definitely sections that were hard to get through, but I couldn't help but thinking, "Oh yeah? Just think how hard it was for Eli to endure this or for Sarah to get through that!" I don't know if I'm explaining it right, but I felt I was given the opportunity to celebrate the strength and endurance of this woman and her children. It was a final, beautiful gift this mom gave her son to share with the world his story of incredible grit, wisdom beyond his years, and beautiful soul. Thank you, again, for the honor of sharing just a bit of your journey.
